October 7: Beyond the Blues: Depression Anxiety Education and Screening Day

Beyond the Blues: Depression Anxiety Education and Screening Day is held every year on the Thursday of Mental Illness Awareness Week. This year, three sites in the Lower Mainland will offer screening and education in different languages. All events take place on October 7, but please see the individual listings for times and additional information.

Richmond: Ismaili Jamatkhanas (open to Ismaili Muslims only)

Depression and anxiety screens in French and Chinese on HeretoHelp

You can take the Beyond the Blues depression and anxiety screens online at any time. They’re available in French and Traditional Chinese.

October 10: World Mental Health Day and mhGAP

In October 2008, the World Health Organization launched the mental health Gap Action Programme or mhGAP. mhGAP aims to increase services for mental, neurological and substance use disorders, particularly in middle- and low-income countries. To mark this year’s World Mental Health Day, the WHO will release the Mental Health Gap Intervention Guide on October 7. This will also mark the beginning of mhGAP’s implementation phase. Positive Aging: An interdisciplinary team approach for health professionals

The 2nd Conference on Positive Aging will take place November 26 and 27 at the Coast Plaza Hotel & Suites in Vancouver. This conference will bring together a wide range of health professionals, researchers and older adults to discuss issues and challenges facing older adults. Sessions include:

Reminder: 15th Annual Cross Cultural Mental Health Conference

The 2010 Cross Cultural Mental Health Conference will take place October 6 and 7 at the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver. This year’s theme is Change Practices: How We Make A Difference, and the conference will feature presentations by Dr. Laurence Kirmayer, Sri Pendaker and Mark Payter of the Vancouver Community Mental Health Project, Debra Presse, and Dr. Steven Aung.
