Supported Housing

PDF | Vol. 12, No. 3 (2017)

Housing isn’t just a place to call home, it’s a place where people can heal, grow, connect with their neighbours, and contribute to their community. Housing matters for everyone’s well-being, but it’s especially hard to manage health problems when you don’t have good housing. And the reality is that people who experience mental illnesses or substance use problems are the most likely to experience unstable housing and face homelessness. Because a roof over your head isn’t always enough, this issue of Visions looks at supported housing. Supported housing is any affordable housing that provides extra services to help people live well. Services might include case work, access to health care providers, training to improve daily living skills, help with employment, and many others. Supported housing is a vital approach—in fact, you’ll find several writers share just how much the ability to live independently has improved their mental health and well-being.
